Quilts Illustrated: 50 Years of the Black Hills Quilt Show

Hundreds and hundreds of quilts have had the spotlight in the Black Hills Quilt Show over the last 50 years. This year’s show is June 6-8 at The Monument and will not disappoint!
You can see some of the finest past work again in a special exhibit opening soon at The Journey Museum.
“Quilts Illustrated: 50 Years of the Black Hills Quilt Show” will fill the Journey’s Adelstein Gallery from May 25 through Sept. 22. It will have 27 quilts (unfortunately, that’s all that would fit!) that show masterful workmanship and techniques, patterns, and fabric choices from the 1970s to today. King size to miniature, classic style to art quilts will all be on display.
Antique and vintage quilts from the collections of Gwynn Hansen and Joyce Ketterling will give a historical perspective. There are some from the Civil War era, a historical South Dakota quilt, and a unique signature quilt signed by Rapid City citizens in the 1950s.
A new “Touch Me Quilt” coordinated by Jean Stenberg will let Journey visitors feel the textures and examine the construction of a quilt. But be assured, all our exhibited quilts will be secured to the walls and protected from touch by rope barriers.
A shortened version of “Points of Pride,” the South Dakota Public Broadcasting documentary about quilts and quilt makers in our state, will play continuously. Many local quilters and a few Guild members are interviewed.
There is no charge to enter the Adelstein Gallery. Before you visit, you’re encouraged to call The Journey at (605) 394-6923 or visit their website, journeymuseum.org, to be sure the Gallery is open the day you’d like to go. At times it is closed to the public because of meetings or other activities.
Proceeds from a donation box inside the exhibit will benefit The Journey. The Journey Exhibit Committee encourages Guild members to donate generously each time you visit, to support our important historical museum.
The quilts hanging in the Journey exhibit were made by Lauri Becher, Beckie Belsaas, Carol Davies, the late Carol Doyle, Bobbie Edwards, Eldora Fischbach, Lynette Helland, Jean Henriksen, Joyce Ketterling.
Also Pearl Krush, Karen Lipp, Kathy Lorch, Kathy Miller, Marcie Parrish, Betty Richards, Janet Sewell, Charlotte Schoonover, Rebecca Smith, Jean Stenberg, and Judy Woodworth.
Lynda Briesemeister is the exhibit committee chair. Committee members are Peggy Adams, Eldora Fischbach, Joyce Ketterling, and Gina Nania.
A beautiful blue and white quilt called “Feathered Stars” will hang in the Journey lobby and later be awarded in a raffle. Jean Stenberg donated the quilt and Rebecca Smith donated the quilting. Tickets can be bought at the museum entry desk, and all proceeds will benefit The Journey.
